Assign#2 - first steps - Sept 25th
Hello
In a pro/con essay, the objective is to show the reader both sides of a topic under discussion but also show your position.
Steps to follow
- The first step is to choose and understand the topic. Take a look at these topics here as suggestions. Choose yours.
- Once the topic is chosen, you must do research on it. Browse the Internet for credible information.
- Based on the research, consider the facts presented, both pros and cons - both angles with the supporting evidence
- Organize a table with columns for pros and cons and the supporting evidence.
- Once you have read the facts, decide on the side of the issue to support.
- Write the draft of your thesis statement, making it clear and defensible.
Eg 1a: Krashen's Monitor Model has been criticised for a perceived lack of scientific rigour and for his downplaying of the importance of language output and grammar instruction, and most likely will be not accepted as the basis of any international school.
Eg 1b: Krashen's Monitor Model lacks scientific rigour and downplays the importance of language output and grammar instruction, and most likely will be not accepted as the basis of any international school.
Eg 2a: While death penalty advocates argue for its deterrent value, opponents point to the risk of executing the wrong person, and the evidence that the death penalty has led to the deaths of innocent people is compelling.
Eg 2b: While death penalty has its deterrent value, there is the risk of executing the wrong person, and the evidence that the death penalty has led to the deaths of innocent people is compelling.
note1: the thesis statement answers your (unstated, implicit) research question and acts as your essay’s main claim; since it is not logical to answer a question with a question, it has to be a declaration, as the word “statement” implies.
Remember to:
- ensure that your viewpoints have credibility by sticking to the facts when presenting information.
- look at the example essay (on the main page) which was adapted for this course.
After doing all this, send to the teacher:
The topic chosen.
The Internet pages browsed.
The table organized with columns for pros and cons and the supporting evidence.
The draft thesis statement.
